Science Camps Set for Summer
Two pilot summer science camp sessions are planned this year at Vista Grande Community Center.
Children will learn hands-on about environmental problems, insects, water and more.
Sessions will run June 1-11 and July 26-Aug. 6. Age groups are 8-10 and 11-13.
Regular hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Extended hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The cost is $100 per child per session, and $50 extra for extended hours. The cost includes a T-shirt.
The science camp is sponsored by Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation in conjunction with Sandia Laboratories-Lockheed Martin and the East Mountain Center for Environmental Studies..
Vista Grande is also hosting its summer recreation programs this summer. For more information call the center at 286-2108.
Moriarty Site Of Benefits Workshop
A free workshop on Social Security disability benefits will be held in Moriarty on Wednesday.
The event, sponsored by the State Bar of New Mexico and the New Mexico Civil Legal Services Commission, will run from 6 to 8 p.m. at El Comedor de Anayas Restaurant. It is free and open to the public as a community service.
Volunteer attorney Michael Hacker will explain Disability Insurance Benefits available under Social Security and answer questions.

Transfer Station Grand Opening
A ribbon-cutting/grand opening ceremony for the East Mountain Transfer Station is planned for Wednesday.
The ceremony will run from noon to 1 p.m. at the newly renovated facility at 711 Old Route 66 in Tijeras.
Bernalillo County Commissioners and state legislators who were instrumental in obtaining funding for the project are expected to attend.
Food and refreshments will be provided.
Dressage Meeting 6 p.m. Wednesday
The next meeting of the Windsong Dressage Social Club will be Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the club room at Windsong Dressage and Equestrian Center, 733 Route 344 in Edgewood.
The social club meets so that riders can get together in a relaxed atmosphere and talk about dressage and related horse-riding issues. Light refreshments are available. Everyone interested in dressage is welcome.
There is no fee and no membership requirement, just a fun evening of talking about our dressage.
Moriarty's July Parade Approaches
It's time to start working on floats and other entries for Moriarty's July Festival Parade on July 3 at 10 a.m.
The parade route will be changed this year. It will still travel along Old Route 66 but will line up on the east end of town by Lisa's Truck Stop. Lineup begins at 9:15. There is no entry fee.
The theme this year is Star Spangled Cowboys.
Prizes will be awarded in five categories: best of theme, best marching unit or band, best equestrian, best youth and judges' choice. Each winner will receive a $50 chamber gift certificate that can be used at any participating Moriarty business.
The Moriarty Chamber of Commerce still has booth spaces available for the July Festival on July 3-4.
Business spaces are $25 for handing out information only. Business spaces to sell merchandise are $35. Food vendor spaces are $75. Arts and crafts spaces are $35.
Each space is 10 by 10 feet. Political, youth groups, churches, and other nonprofit organizations are welcome.

Metallurgy Topic Of Pueblo Lecture
The Friends of Tijeras Pueblo monthly lecture series will continue June 8.
The presentation will be "Metallurgy at Paa-Ko: The Archaeology and Archaeometry of a Seventeenth Century Workshop" by Noah Thomas of the University of Arizona.
In 1996, the remains of a large masonry terrace associated with metallurgical debris were discovered in the ruins of the pueblo of Paa-Ko. Seven seasons of excavation have revealed that the people of Paa-Ko were intensely engaged with metallurgy technology including copper and lead smelting, iron forging and coppersmithing.
The presentation will discuss current understanding of this early colonial adaptation of the technology.
The free lecture will begin at 7 p.m. at the Sandia Ranger Station in Tijeras and light refreshments will be provided. Donations are welcome and go to "The Adobe Project" for the new education center under construction at the Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site behind the ranger station.

Sandia Bear Fair At Peak Ski Lodge
The first Sandia Mountain Bear Fair is scheduled for June 12 at the Sandia Peak Ski Area lodge.
A bear-friendly event with lots of birds, a wolf, snakes and prairie dogs, the bear fair will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Planned exhibits include a "Bear Trail," "How to Camp in Bear Country" and "Feed Birds, Not Bears."
A bear puppet show, free bear coloring books, free "Feed a Bear, Kill a Bear" bumper stickers and much more are planned.
Vacation Bible School in Estancia
Immanuel Baptist Church in Estancia will host vacation Bible school from June 7 to 11.

Moriarty Class Reunion in July
The Moriarty High School Class of 1994 will hold a 10-year reunion in July.
The event will kick off July 9 with a no-host reception for alumni at the Buford Steakhouse starting at 7 p.m.
A family picnic at the park in Moriarty will begin at 11 a.m. on July 10, followed by a dinner for alumni and spouses at the Sheraton Uptown in Albuquerque at 6 p.m.
The cost for the dinner reception is $38 per person. Payments need to be made no later than June 24.

'Love Letters' To Play in June
The East Mountain Community Theatre will present a special summer production of "Love Letters" by A.R. Gurney.
The play will be performed June 25, 26 and 27 at Vista Grande Community Center in Sandia Park. Curtain times will be 7:30 p.m. for Friday and Saturday performances and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students and $5 for children 12 and under. Group rates are available. Call the East Mountain Community Theatre box office for reservations at 286-4864.
The production is directed by veteran Albuquerque actor/director Jim Morley. Morley was the founder of the old Corrales Adobe Theatre and was the theater department chairman at the University of Albuquerque for many years. Morley has directed plays at almost every theater in Albuquerque and is coming out of retirement to direct this special production.
The cast of "Love Letters" will be Marty Hill as Melissa and John Milholland as Andy.
The EMCT is currently holding its season ticket drive for the 2004-05 season. Anyone who buys a season ticket by Monday will be admitted to this production for free. Call 281-4567 or 286-4864 for season ticket information.
Chamber To Host Speaker Series
The East Mountain Chamber of Commerce will launch a weekly speaker series at the chamber office in the Tijeras Visitor Center in June.
The speaker series will be held each Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. Local business people are invited to sign up for a topic of interest to the business or general community.
The conference room at the center is equipped with a white board, and tables and chairs that will accommodate up to 32 people.
