Spring may start in March, but it doesn't really begin in most places until May. That's why most cultures throw a party on May; you are almost guaranteed good weather and most folks are ready to shuffle off winter.
The Estancia Valley and East Mountains are no different. The first weekend in May is a time to celebrate, to get outside and fly a kite, clean the yard or just relax and listen to music. Residents of Mountainair became honorary "Melonheads" Friday night for the Watermelon Mountain Jug Band in the final concert of the 2009 Spring Concert Series. The band played everything from the Beatles to the theme from the "Beverly Hillbillies." Five-time New Mexico banjo champion Ben Perea returned to his birthplace of Mountainair and his family, from Estancia, joined in the fun. A smashing-good weekend was had at Estancia and Moriarty's annual cleanups. Estancia's maintenance supervisor Daniel Chavez said it was a lot of work, but the town got their junk out of town efficiently, and 14 trash bins were filled. Over in Moriarty, cleanup crews were also busy. The town of Estancia celebrated Arbor Day on Saturday by planting eight trees. Mayor Ted Barela wore himself out drilling the holes in Arthur Park. High schooler Emily Weidner said she'll use any excuse to play in the mud. Attendees of an Estancia auction Saturday braved high winds and blowing dust to get their hands on antiques such as guns and jewelry. One diamond ring went for $6,000. The auction was held both Saturday and Sunday on N.M. 55 outside of town. In Edgewood, the theme was kites, energy and art. The annual Green Energy and Kite Festival was held Saturday and Sunday at Wildlife West Nature Park. Kerry Rhodes operated a stunt kite with four strings, called a quad, at the festival Saturday. Also in Edgewood was the Spring Biker Bash held by Thunder Roads Magazine. Bikes were lined up in the magazine's parking lot.And Tijeras saw the opening of the Open-Air Arts Market. Yes, spring is finally here! |
