As the distant clanking of hoofs, rattle of wagon wheels, and dust clouds came closer to Moriarty on Friday evening, the city was preparing for a rip-roaring weekend. After months of preparation by the Heritage Rodeo Committee and many others, riders from the "Best of America by Horseback" tour stopped by for a weekend of barbecue, rodeos, dancing and fun.
The riders came into Estancia along N.M. 41 about 6 p.m. The night was topped off with music by "Lance Valliant." Friday, temperatures squelched at 90 degrees, Saturday was quite the opposite. High winds and low temperatures set in for the presentation of Moriarty as being named one of the best cities in America by RFT-TV host Tom Seay. The Youth Rodeo went on as planned with events such as mutton busting and calf riding, followed by a dance that evening. Sunday, a church service preceded jackpot bull riding in the afternoon. The riders stayed an extra two nights in Moriarty, according to Mayor Adan Encinias. |
