Now that updates to the Estancia Aquatic Center are being completed, it looks like Arthur Park may be next.
At Monday night's meeting, the Estancia Board of Trustees brainstormed ideas for making the park handicap accessible. Mayor Ted Barela was contacted by New Beginnings Day Hab Director Terry Muth about making the pond and picnic areas wheelchair accessible. Barela is investigating different options for making that happen. These included having a type of soil cement walkway as opposed to concrete. Trustee Michelle Dunlap expressed concern that the park would become overloaded with concrete pathways, taking away from the park's natural beauty. "I'm all for anyone wanting to come to the park to be able to," Dunlap said. "I just don't want to look at the park and see all cement." The biggest obstacle is the town's tight budget, Barela said, but he is looking at cost options to make a landing near the pond and a wide path going to a pavilion and parking lot. The path could be easy on the eyes and work well for wheelchairs, Barela said. In other town business: The board tabled action on approving the final 2010 budget. The board has until the end of July to make any changes, town Clerk Tammy Meyer said. The board unanimously approved Ricci and Co. for the 2009 audit, after a "glowing recommendation from Torrance County," Meyer said. The town had previously accepted a bid from Chester Maddocks CPA but reconsidered after checking references, Meyer said. A special meeting to review the 2009 budget will be held June 30 at 5:45 p.m. at town hall. Dunlap announced Corrections Corporation of America was awarding the town of Estancia $1,000 to be used for a summer youth program. Town residents will be able to make nominations for town beautification awards. Those wishing to nominate a town resident whose yard looks great can do so with an attachment in next month's newsletter. |
