With state and federal dollars in scarce supply these days, the town of Estancia is now working to secure funding for road and water improvements.
Clerk/Treasurer Tammy Meyer gave an update on the grant applications the town has and will submit during the Estancia board of trustees meeting Tuesday night. The town is applying for a $500,000 federal grant for a fire suppression system or water supply lines to be constructed throughout the town. Some good news came the town's way this week when Meyer received word from the state Water Trust Board that the town's application for $525,000 had made it through the first round of submissions. It was announced last month that the town had been awarded $250,000 in a federal spending bill recently signed by President Barack Obama. The town will use the money for main street improvements, Meyer said. She added that she spoke with a member of U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich's office, who told her a contract will not be available until summer, with the funding available in the fall. Meyer said until she sees the contract, she won't know what exactly the money can be used for. As for the annual Community Development Block Grant, Meyer said a $50,000 planning grant for the city's comprehensive plan is looking promising, as well as a $500,000 wastewater treatment grant the town applied for in December. If awarded, Meyer explained, the funding would be used to help get many of the residents not on the town's sewer system on line. Meyer said she recently received news about annual road funding, the state Municipal Arterial Program and cooperative funds from the state Department of Transportation. For MAP funds, the 2009 funding was not reduced, while the 2010 funding was reduced by 10 percent, Meyer said. The 2010 cooperative funds also were reduced by 10 percent, she said. She expects new contracts from the NMDOT for the funding, but hasn't received word yet on when that will happen. In other town business: Milton McLain was appointed to the library board. Town employee position descriptions were approved. A price quote from Integrated Technologies was approved for Internet technology support for the town's three servers. The company also services Torrance County systems. The board voted to submit a letter of support of the Estancia Basin Regional Water Plan in lieu of adopting a resolution. |
