Once a Pinto, always a Pinto.
Todd Bibiano, Moriarty High School's assistant principal, is spearheading an effort to establish an alumni association for the ninth- through 12th-grade institution, the largest high school located in the Estancia Valley and the East Mountains areas. "I graduated from here in 1988 and never heard of an alumni association for here," said the 39-year-old Bibiano during an interview in the lobby of John B. Salvo Gymnasium on Monday. "My family is from here, and my mother graduated from here. Nobody's ever heard of an alumni association ever being here in the past." Bibiano, who lives in Moriarty, is married to Vanessa Bibiano, an instructional coach at Moriarty Elementary School. The couple has two daughters, Siena, 5, and Sydney, 17 months. To kick off the alumni association effort, Bibiano said information tables or booths will be set up at the Pintos' home football and volleyball games this coming fall season. The initial home gridiron contest is Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. versus Gallup Miyamura, and the first home volleyball matches will be during the Moriarty Tournament on Sept. 3 and 4. "We're going to try to have an info table at athletic events, at home football and volleyball games, where Moriarty graduates can find out about our plans," he said. "We can then set up a database of former students who might be interested from that. Then in the spring, or maybe next summer, we can have a meeting to get things really started." Bibiano, who was formerly the school's softball coach for six years, emphasized that the new Moriarty High School Alumni Association won't just be for ex-athletes. "It's all-encompassing," he said. "It's for everybody. It's just that athletic events are the most well attended. After we get a database started, we'll develop the organization, come up with procedures and ways to help the students at Moriarty High. It's definitely not just for athletes. It could be a huge help for Moriarty High School." The new group can include former Pintos from anywhere on the globe, even those from such hideaways as Dewey, Okla., for instance. "My vision is an alumni association that is for all former high school students to be a resource for Moriarty High School," Bibiano said. "I'd like to see if the association could establish a scholarship fund for graduating students. It's not just going to be for people who live around here, although we'd like for many of them to join. It'll be for the extended Moriarty High School community so they can enjoy being a part of the Moriarty High School community again. It could be worldwide." Bibiano said he receives calls from all over from Moriarty graduates. "They're always surprised at how much we've done as far as facility improvements," he said. "And they're surprised at all the extracurricular activities we have. They still have pride in their school." The alumni association could be helpful in getting reunions going as well. "It's pretty easy to put a reunion together nowadays with things like classmates.com," Bibiano said. "But an alumni association will help people get involved. Moriarty's other home football games, all with 7 p.m. kickoffs, will be: Sept. 10 — Belen Oct. 8 — Roswell High Oct. 29 — St. Pius Nov. 5 — Del Norte The Pintos' other home volleyball matches, starting at 6:30 p.m., include: Sept. 8 — Santa Fe Capital Sept. 14 — Eldorado Sept. 28 — Albuquerque Academy Oct. 6 — St. Pius Oct. 21 — Del Norte Oct. 28 — Atrisco Heritage For information on Moriarty's alumni association, call Bibiano at 832-5936 or e-mail him at
